How to sew a mitered corner on a wide double fold hem
This sewn mitered corner technique is great for wider double fold hems 1cm / 3/8" and up. You can use it on napkins and garments, basically anywhere you have a corner on a double fold hem.
It will take a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it you'll be glad you've added this techique to your sewing skills. It adds a nice touch to your handmades and it reduces bulk.
If you are making a project with a narrow seam allowance, up to about 1 cm / 3/8", you might want to opt for a folded mitered corner. There will be a small gap in the end result, but on smaller seam allowances you won't really notice this.
You'll need:
- Steam iron
- Scissors
- Fabric
- Sewing machine
- Ruler
- Fabric pen, tailors chalk or a pencil
How to sew a mitered corner on a double fold hem
For the tutorial I've marked the seam allowance on fabric with a fabric marker. Accuracy is key, so you can do the same, or simply fold and measure the fabric as you go.
Working on the wrong side of the fabric. First fold and press the double hem towards the wrong side of the fabric to create fold lines.
First on one side then on the alternating side, because you will partially unfold the seam allowance later.
keep alternating sides
When you've folded and pressed both seams allowances, partially unfold the double fold hem.
unfold the second fold on each side.
Now fold the tip of the corner towards the wrong side of the fabric, where the two seam allowances intersect. I'm using a marker, but you can also eye ball this and simply fold over and press the fold line.
Now fold your tip in half, right sides together.
And sew over the fold line or the marking you made earlier.
Snip of the tip, leving an 0.3 cm / 1/8" seam allowance
Trim the seam allowance even further, by snipping of the tip at the end of the seam allowance.
Press the seam allowance open.
turn your seam allowance towards the inside of of the double fold hem.
Use something pointy to turn out the corner.
Give your mitered corner a final press before your edge stitch to secure the double fold hem and corner.
A great way to use this technique is to sew a reusable gift wrap. You can see the technique in the video below:
